Kodak Alaris Document Scanners on EPEAT™ Registry of Greener Electronics

EpeatLogo.pngMinimizing environmental impacts through product assessment and design has been a longstanding commitment for Kodak Alaris' Information Management business.  Kodak Alaris has successfully registered 28 scanner models at the EPEAT Silver level. EPEAT is the definitive global registry for greener electronics. Aligning products with a consensus global rating system such as EPEAT helps customers recognize environmental performance and satisfy Sustainable Public Procurement policies.

Kodak Alaris' document scanners provide reliable, high-performing and quality solutions for data-driven applications in a variety of environments, from small businesses to worldwide operations. Registered scanners include both production scanners for high-volume document processing requiring real-world speed for around-the-clock productivity and distributed scanners that enable departments and workgroups to more effectively capture and share information from paper-based documents.

Life Cycle Assessment

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is an analysis of the environmental impacts of a product throughout its entire life cycle, including:

  • Raw material production
  • Manufacturing
  • Packaging and distribution
  • Product use
  • End of life disposition
Kodak Alaris uses LCA to improve the attributes of our products, to respond to customer questions, and to support marketing claims. Addressing these diverse demands requires both qualitative and quantitative approaches Kodak Alaris employs a number of tools to help inform our product design decisions: including carbon footprint calculations, International Standards Organization (ISO) LCAs, and streamlined LCAs performed using globally recognized methods.

LCAs evaluate product life cycle impacts on the environment, including use of energy and other natural resources and the release of materials or emissions to the environment. An LCA is considered streamlined if it utilizes qualitative methods or focuses only on the key elements of an LCA. The carbon footprint, a measure of a product's total greenhouse gas emissions, is calculated as part of both ISO and streamlined LCAs and provides a qualitative measure to compare greenhouse gas emissions at different stages of a single product's life and between different products.

One ISO LCA determined the environmental impact from three scanners that are designed, manufactured and sold by Kodak Alaris. This assessment followed the ISO process and was reviewed by an independent third party, The New York State Pollution Prevention Institute at Rochester Institute of Technology.

Assessment of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions

In addition to the use of complete ISO Life Cycle Assessments, Kodak Alaris has also conducted Greenhouse Gas emission assessments for many of it's document scanners. Greenhouse Gas assessments are essentially LCAs that focus solely on the potential emissions of Greenhouse Gases. The following documents summarize the GHG emission results from assessments conducted in accordance with ISO 14044 standards. The Life Cycle Inventory data and LCA results for the Document Scanner Assessments have also been submitted to the U.S Life Cycle Inventory Database, where it is available to the public. Access the National Renewable Energy Laboratory Life-Cycle Inventory Database and search for “scanner”.
